Within the heritage zone centred on the Kurunegala town located to the north-west of Sri Lanka are Buddhist monasteries and irrigation works representing the historic age. According to chronicles, when the kingdoms moved towards the south-east, Kurunegala has also been operative as an administrative centre. The Central Cultural Fund conducts heritage management in this heritage zone under the north-western cultural square centred on the Ridi Vihara.
