Sri Maha Bodhi
The great Bodhi-tree shrine in Anuradhapura is an off-shoot of the most revered Bodhi tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment and thus to this day remains to be the oldest historic tree in the world. The Sri Maha Bodhi was brought to Sri Lanka by Theri Sanghamitta the daughter of emperor Asoka of India and in the 3rd Century B.C. planted it in Thissamaharama by King Devanampiya Thissa. Since then the Bodhi tree shrine remains to be the most venerated sacred monument worshipped by Buddhists the world over.
