Evidence of an Ancient Port City in Trincomalee

A very successful surface survey in Trincomalee by a group of archaeologists from the Central Cultural Fund, has uncovered evidence on existence of a prosperous port city at the site of the ancient Gokanna Thiththa harbor.
Many historical sources had indicated that there were harbors on both western and Eastern coasts of the island. According to the chronicles and Mahawansa the main harbor of the eastern coast was known as Gokanna Thiththa.
A surface survey around the McHeyzer stadium in Trincomalee which was conducted last week yielded artifacts including potsherds and beads of foreign origin.
