The Abhayagiriya Museum, situated within the historic monastery complex of Abhayagiriya in Anuradhapura, opened its doors to the public on June 13, 1992. Designed following the ancient Panchavasa monastery layout, the museum was constructed by the Central Cultural Fund with financial support from the People’s Republic of China. Named the “Mahatissa-Faxian Cultural Complex,” the museum honors Ven. Kupikkala Mahatissa, the first abbot of the Abhayagiri Maha Vihara, and Ven. Fa-Xian, the Chinese Buddhist monk who studied Buddhism at this site from 411 to 412 AD. The museum serves as a central hub for the Abhayagiriya archaeological complex.

The primary aim of the museum is to showcase artifacts recovered from Abhayagiriya, illustrating Sri Lanka’s historical status as a prosperous nation thriving through international relations, with a remarkable fusion of art and technology.

Displayed artifacts provide a wealth of insights into ancient advancements in metallurgy, writing, religious practices, sculpture, architecture, artistic techniques, hygiene, environmental conservation, hydrological technology, monastic management, and timekeeping, reflecting the vibrant culture that existed at Abhayagiri Vihara from the 1st century BC to the 11th century AD.
