After Yapahuwa Kingdom, Athugalpura (Kurunegala) became the main kingdom of Sri Lanka. The kingdom of Athugalpura, founded by King Bhuvanekabahu II (1293-1302 AD), flourished during the reign of Parakramabahu IV (1302 – 1326 AD). Admirable expressions of Sri Lankan literature can be found in this period. Due to the rapid urbanization of the area, only the remnants of the ancient walls built around the ancient city of Athugalpura remain, and only a few ruins of the Royal Palace and the Temple of the Tooth remain.
