Kataragama Museum
Opened on 28th August 2008, the Kataragama Museum is located within the Ruhunu Kataragama Devala (Shrine of God Skanda Kumara) complex in Kataragama. The aim of this museum is to preserve and exhibit the heritage of ancient Ruhunu kingdom for the future generations and to educate the pilgrims and tourists who visit the Kataragama Devala.
A large trove of sacred goods which belong to the historical Kataragama Devala and artifacts that manifest the heritage of Ruhuna are exhibited at the museum. Since the Kataragama shrine is venerated by Buddhist, Hindu, Islam and Veddah communities this museum consists of objects which demonstrate this multicultural heritage.
The gallery plan consists of the inner gallery and outer gallery. The following artefacts are exhibited in these two galleries.
