The heritage zone Ampara or Digamadulla is on the East to Sri Lanka. Human activities in this zone run back up to the Middle Stone Age and natural stone caves are found in abundance.

Sigiriya literally means ‘Lion Rock’ after the shape of entrance to the rock fortress which was in the form of a recumbent lion whose remnants could still be seen in the gigantic paws at the entrance to the palace. A palace indeed, for it served for a short period of about a decade and a half as the political hub of Sri Lanka.

One of the most significant and sacred cities that belong to the ancient world, Anuradhapura was the first capital of Sri Lanka. Hosting UNESCO world heritage sites this city is the core of Buddhism and its people due to its grandeur history and the vast array of Buddhist monuments that dates back to more than 2000 years.

This heritage site is centred on the Batticaloa town in the Eastern province of Sri Lanka. Batticaloa is one part of the zone referred to as Digamadulla in the historic age. Digamadulla had been a rice supplying area for the country during the Anuradhapura period.

The "Jathika Namal Uyana" is "the largest Na-forest and pink quartz mountain in Asia". This unrevealed unique natural heaven has been brought forward to the attention of the world almost 15 years before, by Ven. Wanawasi Rahula Thero.

The Polonnaruwa legacy may have lasted for only two centuries however judging by the colossal monuments and monasteries it left behind it is clear that it was dynasty that cannot be easily forgotten.

Dambulla is a heritage site of the Cultural Triangle of Sri Lanka. The significant heritage here is the five caves of living rock with murals and sculptures. The pre-Brahmi inscriptions belonging to the third century BC and the murals of the eighteenth century reflect human activities over a long period.

Ritigala archaeological area is located in an exceptional environmental zone within the dry zone of Sri Lanka. Forty kilometres from Sigiri, Ritigala comprises a mountain range about 750 meters in height with biodiversity and various climatic conditions.

The sacred tooth relic of Lord Buddha is placed in Kandy in a temple known as the Sri DaladaMaligawa, one of the most venerable temples of the Buddhist world. It was tradition to house the sacred tooth relic in the city that the King chose to reside in and according to ancient scripts Kandy was the last capital in Sri Lanka.

Archaeological heritage of the Ratnapura district belonging to the wet zone of Sri Lanka represents those of the pre-historic age to historic age. In research into the pre-historic age, this region has been confirmed as a significant zone where evidence is available up to the Pleistocene age.

Galle is a coastal town on the South-West of Sri Lanka. According to archaeological research done within this heritage zone, archaeological heritage of the historical age and archaeological sites of the colonial period have been identified.

Ibbankatuwa is located at Ibbankatuwa village close to Sigiriya on the Kurunegala- Trincomalee main road. It is the best preserved proto-historic burial site in Sri Lanka. The Ibbankatuwa Burial Site extending over a land area of 13 hectares comprises of stone cist type burial graves of the Megalithic tradition.

Yapahuwa, a natural hillock in the North-Western region, may be regarded as an archaeological heritage site. According to archaeological excavations done on the Eastern slope of the Yapahuwa hillock it has been discovered that there had been human activity from pre-historic times (5000 years before the present).

Jaffna peninsula represents the northern part of Sri Lanka. According to archaeological research done so far it has been confirmed that there had been human activities in the pre-historic periods in this region. According to written records Jaffna peninsula is mentioned for the first time in connection with the second visit of the Buddha to Sri Lanka.

The Southern province of Sri Lanka known as Ruhuna, in ancient times, have a significant amount of heritage sites that made a mark in Sri Lanka’s history. The Southern capital of ancient Sri Lanka, Mahagama (now Thissamaharama), is as old as the city of Anuradhapura.

Dambadeniya is the third kingdom of Sri Lanka that became significant due to the Sacred Tooth Relic that was placed here during the rule of King Vijayabahu III in the 13th Century.

Within the heritage zone centred on the Kurunegala town located to the North-West of Sri Lanka are Buddhist monasteries and irrigation works representing the historic age.

Paduwasnuwara is one of the four centers of Wayamaba Cultural quadrangle of the Central Cultural Fund. The history of the city runs back to 12th Century A.D. When the Indian invaders captured the Temple of the Tooth relic from the Yapahuwa Kingdom and took it to India it was King Parakramabahu that fought for it and brought it back to Sri Lanka.

Matara is a heritage zone near the Southern coast of Sri Lanka. Several archaeological and historical heritage sites representing the historic age are scattered here. Particularly, Matara town comes into prominence during the colonial period.

During the 52 years (1017-1070) of the Chola’s rule in the North of the Island King Vijayabahu, with the aim of strengthening the South first resided in Ramba Viharaya. For fifteen years the king built his army from the Ramba Monastic Complex and in 1070 ousted the Chola’s from Polonnaruwa.
