Opening of Seethawaka Museum
A new museum was established to facilitate the exploration of information about the Seethawaka kingdom, an important kingdom of the Sri Lankan monarchy.
This museum was created by renovating an old building owned by the Sri Lankan Railway Department, adjacent to the city of Avissawella, to facilitate the access of all local and foreign tourists passing through Avissawella.
The Seethawaka Museum, established by the Central Cultural Fund under the guidance of His Excellency the President, was handed over to the people on the 21st of July, 2024 by the Hon. Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena.
For this occasion, Hon. Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, Minister of Transport, Highways and Mass Media Dr.Bandula Gunawardena, Minister of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs Mr Vidura Wickramanayake, Member of the Parliament, Mr Yadamini Gunawardena, Minister of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs, Mr Vidura Wickramanayake, Ministry Secretaries, Director General of the Central Cultural Fund, Prof. Gamini Ranasinghe, Additional Director General, Dr Chandima Bogahawatta, other directors and officials participated.
After an extensive study conducted in the areas belonging to Seethawaka Kingdom by an expert committee headed by Professor Alexander Kapukotuwa of the University of Sri Jayawardenepura, the initial phase of the museum was completed and opened for public exhibition.
