Buduruwagala Cultural Heritage Tourism Development Project Launched to Boost Local Livelihoods and Promote Sustainable Tourism

A series of projects is being implemented by the Central Cultural Fund and the Uva Provincial Tourism Ministry to develop tourism activities around the historically significant Buduruwagala Cultural Heritage Site. Under these projects, with the support of the European Union and the Solidaridad non-governmental organisation, a modern solar-powered boat has been provided for use in tourist transport services at the Buduruwagala tank. This initiative aims to improve the living standards of the fishing community whose livelihoods depend on the tank and to enable their direct contribution to the tourism industry.

The project has been introduced as part of a long-term program designed to enhance the living conditions of the people living around the heritage site while ensuring their direct involvement in heritage conservation and related tourism activities. The management of the heritage area will be carried out by the Central Cultural Fund, while the operational and manpower support for cultural activities related to the tank will be provided by the tourist boat service unit affiliated with the Buduruwagala Fishermen’s Society.

In parallel with this project, arrangements have been made to offer tourists a new evening and night-time experience, including opportunities to enjoy Sri Lankan culinary traditions and musical entertainment.

The project will be implemented in several phases, focusing on the economic empowerment of rural communities, the development of regional infrastructure, and the promotion of Sri Lanka’s unique cultural heritage to the world.
